One of the biggest postpartum nutrition mistakes? Not eating enough protein.
Your postpartum body is recovering from birth, rebuilding tissues, balancing hormones, and if you're breastfeeding, producing milk around the clock. All of that requires protein.
The good news? You don't need to completely overhaul your meals to get more of it.
Some easy ways to boost the protein in your postpartum meals:
• Add shredded chicken, pulled pork, beef, or leftover meat (+20–26g protein)
• Stir in ground beef, turkey, lamb, or chicken (+21–24g protein)
• Crack an egg into oatmeal, rice pudding, congee, or soups while reheating (+6–7g protein)
• Mix in collagen peptides (+10g protein)
• Add bone broth powder or flavorless protein powder (+10–25g protein)
• Stir in lentils or black beans for a budget-friendly protein boost
• Top savory dishes with full-fat Greek yogurt (+7–9g protein)
One of our favorite postpartum meal prep hacks is keeping cooked proteins frozen in single-serving portions so they're easy to thaw and add to meals throughout the week.
Small changes can make a big difference when it comes to postpartum recovery, breastfeeding nutrition, and keeping your energy up during the fourth trimester.
