“Don’t Do This!” For those handy husbands wanting to save some money and install their own drain lines. Don’t ever notch the floor joists. Floor joists are a crucial part of the floor structure. When compromised the entire floor structure is weakened and can cause sagging, cracking in flooring and general weakness. Unfortunately in this case the floor was already starting to sag and now the seller is left with no choice but to have repairs professionally made. Fortunately the buyers called Structure-Safe Home Inspections before they were stuck with making these costly repairs. If your going to do it, do it right!

Having the proper tools is half the battle of a proficient home inspection. Pictured I am using a moisture meter on a presumed leak on the underside decking in an attic. My meter indicated that this area had a much higher moisture content then it should have. In this situation I would note an active water leak in my report that is in need of repair.
