Family, friends, and supporters of Nolan Xavier Wells gathered at a Mississippi church on Monday to honor the life of the 18-year-old, whose death after a July 4 boating trip with friends has drawn national attention and fueled growing calls for an independent investigation.

The funeral was set to be officiated by Rev. Al Sharpton, while renowned civil rights attorney Ben Crump, who represents Wells’ family, was expected to deliver a powerful call for justice.

A Georgia pastor is going viral after delivering a fiery message that has sparked intense debate across social media following the disappearance of 18-year-old Nolan Wells.

“My message is going to make some people uncomfortable,” the pastor wrote. “Good. Because comfort has never protected our children.”

The pastor urged Black parents to stop confusing social acceptance with safety and to stop assuming that an invitation automatically means their child will be protected.

“I don’t care how wealthy the neighborhood is. I don’t care how prestigious the school is. I don’t care how many pictures your child posts smiling with their friends. None of that guarantees that someone will know what to do—or tell the truth—if something goes wrong.”

Referencing the unanswered questions surrounding Nolan Wells’ disappearance, the pastor said many Black families see high-profile cases that leave them wondering whether enough was done to protect Black lives or fully explain what happened. He argued that those concerns should motivate parents to become more involved, ask harder questions, and refuse to let fear of appearing offensive outweigh their responsibility to keep their children safe.

“You are not raising your child to make everyone comfortable,” he wrote. “You are raising them to come home alive.” Johnson later commented a more direct and stern position of, "Stop letting your black kids go on vacation with all white groups"

The pastor encouraged parents to personally know the adults involved in every trip, verify plans independently, establish mandatory check-ins, and make sure their children understand that they never have to stay in any situation that makes them feel unsafe.

“If asking questions offends someone, ask them anyway,” he wrote. “If someone thinks you’re overprotective, let them think it. You can apologize for hurting someone’s feelings. You cannot apologize to your child after they’re gone.”

The message has divided social media. Some praised the pastor for saying what many parents privately feel, while others argued his comments risk fueling suspicion based on race instead of individual behavior. The pastor rejected that criticism, insisting his message is not about condemning in*******al friendships but about reminding parents that trust should always be earned—not assumed.

“We pray over our children before they leave the house,” he concluded. “Now it’s time to start asking harder questions before they leave town.”
