Medications such as Ozempic and Wegovy are widely known for helping control blood sugar and support weight loss.
But new research suggests they may also influence brain reward pathways involved in addictive behaviors.
In a large study of U.S. veterans with type 2 diabetes, people taking GLP-1 medications were associated with lower rates of substance-use–related hospital visits and overdoses compared with some other diabetes treatments.
Scientists believe this may be linked to GLP-1 receptors found in brain regions that regulate reward and motivation.
However, the study was observational, meaning it cannot prove that the drugs prevent addiction. More clinical trials are needed to understand the connection.
Still, the findings highlight how medications originally designed for metabolism may also interact with the brain.
Do you think medicines developed for one condition could help treat others in the future?
