If you’re ever worried about a water snake in your favorite swimming hole, know that they’re more skittish of us than we are of them. When they’re noticed, they’ll ALWAYS flee. Probably some of the more skittish snakes I’ve ever encountered.

They’re usually all around us though. This photo was taken at a very popular fishing lake in St. Louis County. You’d never know he was there.

Nonvenomous Water Snake

For the next 3 days I’m going to show you two Venomous snakes and a Non-Venomous snake they’re often mistaken for.

This is the Venomous Eastern Copperhead. I’ve been called to relocate 3 of these guys already this year. This main photo in this graphic, and the page cover photo, are photos of one I relocated from Eureka.

These guys, as with many snakes, are beneficial to rodent control and thus tick control as well. Studies have shown that snakes are significant tick destroyers in eastern forests. When we control tick populations, we control Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever and Lyme Disease.
