RuPaul
First as an underground filmmaker & then as a singer, before breaking into the drag scene. Originally his style of performance was less mainstream, & was considered “gender bending” & not full-on female impersonation. By 1993, he perfected the look that millions of people recognize today.
In 1993, he recorded a dance album called Supermodel of the World, which spawned the popular single “Supermodel (You Better Work).” It became a hit in the US & the UK, & was played heavily on MTV. His next two singles reached #1.
He went on to host The RuPaul Show, appeared in movies, & became the first drag queen to be featured as the face of MAC Cosmetics.
RuPaul has won two GLAAD Media Awards: one for promoting equality nationwide, & one for his program RuPaul’s Drag Race. He is the world's most famous icon drag queen.
