Dr. Franklin spent a few days last week doing some contract work with 18/19 year olds. They reminded her so much of her old high school seniors that she got homesick.

When she first started, there were students sitting in chairs, on the steps, and leaning on the walls, waiting for me. As we spoke, she found out that many of them had never met with their high school counselor...but they needed to. As they shared their stories, the common theme was that they had fallen through the cracks in high school. They were all black and brown kids, they were all lower-achieving in their academics, they were all
overlooked or ignored, and they all needed help that they never got but that they should have received. We have to do better with this population of child. She met with them for 10 minutes each. In those 10 minutes, they talked and cried, they cried and talked. She held them and rocked them. So much trauma.

Educators, as we prepare to return to school, remember to handle the kids who appear to be the toughest…with the most gentle gloves. Things have happened to them that have made them need to be tough to survive. And if you think you don’t have time to make a difference…it only took her 10 minutes…

Thank goodness for technology! Intersection met with school counselors and district leaders to discuss how school counselors and social workers share a unique emotional learning space.

Tonight Intersection had another opportunity to work with Illinois school administrators to develop the role their school counselors play in master scheduling. Spoiler alert: school counselors do not play a role in the creation of the master schedule! Dr. Franklin advocated for school counselors using the national model established by the American School Counselors Association (ASCA). Have questions? Just ASCA! 😉
