Coyote

First, through the vegetation, I saw something heading my way along the narrow path beside the creek.
I kneeled and got my camera ready.

It was a coyote—limping, looking back, as if it were being chased.
Eventually it spotted me and took a detour up the hill. That’s when I could clearly see it: the front right paw curled up, visibly compromised.

I looked back down the path to see if it was traveling alone.
It wasn’t.

There it was—another coyote, focused, driven, guided by pure determination.

It was a moment of my life.
Moments of theirs.
And I can only let my imagination fill in the story of what came before… and what followed after.
