A lot has been said about Erika Kirk expressing forgiveness toward her husband’s killer. Forgiveness is a powerful thing, and I applaud her for doing so. In that moment, she chose faith and trust in God over bitterness and hate. It was a beautiful testimony of grace in the midst of great pain, and I can only hope I would be willing to do the same.

But forgiveness has two sides. The first is an attitude of forgiveness, where we release anger, entrust judgment to God and civil authority, and free ourselves from the poison of bitterness.

The second is the restoration of the relationship, which requires genuine repentance. We should pray for the killer that God would grant him repentance. That would be a very good thing.
But until there is evidence of such repentance, extending this second side of forgiveness would not be just.
