Meet April's Brother of the Month: Steven Ito. Just wrapping up his third year here at UCSB, Ito is en route to finish out strong with a degree in Financial Math & Stats! Here's a little interview we got out of Ito to see what his life is like outside of the classroom!

1. Let's start with the basics: What was it, exactly, that got you into playing football?

When it came to the playground, football was always my sport of choice. I liked running around, getting dirty, and being physical. 8th grade rolled around and either my father finally convinced my mother to let me play or my persistent begging got through. Regardless, I was stoked. I loved playing in high school and enjoyed much success at the middle linebacker position; earning All-Ventura County and All-Star honors.

2. When the word 'strawberry' comes up, what comes to mind?
Family. Family comes first to me and a big, red strawberry is the perfect symbol for it. My grandfather began growing strawberries in California a number of years ago and now my father and uncle continue to run the family business. I’ll tell you what, you have never had a strawberry until you’ve tried one from an Ito farm.

3. What are your favorite pastimes when you're back home in the scenic city of Ventura?

Ahh, there’s so much to do. From surfing, fishing, and hitting the beach to golfing and going out downtown. I even like hanging out on the strawberry fields, but I know that’s not everyone’s cup of tea! There is a lot to do, but my favorite part in being back home is seeing family and old friends.

4. Considering you've been active in Sigma Pi since your freshman year of college, you've probably seen it all. What is the most memorable time you've had in the house?

One of the funniest predicaments I’ve seen at chapter was the time the skunk got inside the downstairs closet. The stubborn thing sprayed a couple brothers and refused to cooperate. We had to build a maze that lead into the animal control cage and with a little extra work from Ryan Bowen we solved the problem.

5. Lastly, what is your main goal for your upcoming senior year?

Just to finish strong and to enjoy every moment I have left at UCSB. Its been a quite the ride so far and I’m excited for what’s to come next. Next year senior house is going to get wild!

As the old saying goes, it's always better late than never! We are proud to present Ashcon Minoiefar as March's Brother of the Month! despite his busy schedule as a UCSB Off-Campus Senator, we were able to sneak in a few interview questions with him!

1. There’s no doubt you have the most unique name in the whole house. What are the origins of the name “Ashcon”?

The name Ashcon comes from an ancient dynasty of Persian Shahs (Kings). The dynasty was call Ashkonian and thats where the name originates.

2. You always seem like you’re putting a ton of work for the community of Isla Vista. As of right now, what are your main goals as an off-campus senator?

As of right now my main goals have been to reduce the levels of police at Deltopia and Halloween. Successes in the past have been moving barricades off DP, getting rid of horses and remove zero tolerance enforcement of the noise ordinance and festival ordinance. My goal is to have all extra police gone by Halloween, which is looking very possible. I want to make sure university does not punish students in students groups or in resident halls for calling an ambulance when their friend is overdosing or has alcohol poisoning, so students feel comfortable calling for help.

3. How has joining greek life changed your college experience?

Joining Greek Life has given me a family. Coming from a large Persian family, I missed having such a large support group. Nothing is better than coming home after a long day to dinner with my brothers. I couldn’t do what I do in AS if it wasn’t for the support my brothers provide for me.

4. All work and no play makes Ashcon and dull boy. How do you like to de-stress?

Not too much time for play, but when I do I love to go to Pizza My Heart to grab a jar with my friends. Skating is also a really great way to destress. Super smash bros is a must and just having a good long conversation.

5. And lastly, tell us something about yourself that not too many people know!

Not many people know that I am a 2nd Degree Black Belt. I have trained in Kempo Karate, Aikido, Mui Tai, Jiu Jitsu, and more. For a few years I began training to try and do an amateur MMA fight once I turned 18, but I got tendonitis really badly in my shoulders and unfortunately had to quit. Martial Arts used to be the biggest part of my life, I guess public service ended up replacing it.

Happy Birthday to our beloved brother and late chapter director Gary Grubacich. Gary passed away a year ago but his spirit continues to live on in our chapter. He gave his life and all of his time to brothers of Sigma Pi, he has been truly missed.
