VOICE and Skyline High School hosted a student panel comprised of three SHS student mentors and one VOICE site coordinator. The session was developed and moderated by Luke Froman, SHS senior and 4-year mentor.
The panel addressed 1) challenges that high school students face today, 2) what have they learned from mentoring younger students, 3) what trends/behaviors are they seeing in your mentees, and 4) how can adult mentors better understand and relate to the needs of younger students?
Main takeaways included 1) the importance of being open to learning new things and new perspectives from your mentee; 2) prioritizing a relationship that is grounded in quality , consistency and mutual respect; 3) the importance of having fun and doing different activities that engage the heart, body and mind, and 4) staying with your mentee even though things might get difficult at times.
Many thanks to Riya Chopade, Denise Darnell, Luke Froman, Maya Krishnan and Kunal Srivastava for sharing their wisdom!

January is National Mentoring month! This is a great time to reflect on your journey as a mentor (and maybe as a mentee, too). Perhaps reach out to those who have mentored you (formally or informally) and made a difference in your life.
Mentors give so generously of their time and spirit. We are grateful for you!
