Religion, as it is commonly practiced, is based on belief — and belief is the outcome of fear, of the desire for security. You believe in something because you do not know. And not knowing, the mind clings to what has been told, what has been handed down — by a father, by a priest, by a teacher, by a tradition, by a book.

But belief is not truth. Belief prevents direct perception. The moment you believe in something, you have already closed the door to discovering what is. To seek truth through belief is to walk in darkness guided by another’s torch.

Now, a mind that is religious in the real sense is not one that believes, but one that is in a state of inquiry — not accepting, not following, not obeying, but watching, listening, questioning, doubting. That is the beginning of intelligence.

To be spiritual is not to follow a path, for all paths lead only to that which is known. The sacred cannot be approached through systems or gurus. It reveals itself when the mind is utterly still, without motive, without seeking, without a center. Then what is true, what is immeasurable, comes into being — not as an experience, not as a conclusion, but as a living movement beyond thought.

So the true religious mind is free from belief. It has no authority — not of scriptures, not of teachers, not of tradition. For truth is a pathless land, and you cannot approach it by any road, by any method, by any discipline. You must walk alone, and in that aloneness there is clarity, and in that clarity, the other is. | Sadhguru 08/12/2025
