Thank you !

How many people look at their labs and actually understand the results? Over the next few weeks I will breakdown what your labs mean and what kind of implications it may have.

Hematology can be VERY complex and I do my best to simplify it as much as possible. Here is a review on the main values I pay attention to when evaluating a CBC (complete blood count).

Retic count is a big test for sickle cell patients, and I'm sure many patients have been told 'oh your labs are normal you can't be having a crisis.' For patients with hemoglobin SC who generally have higher baseline hemoglobin, we wouldn't really expect to see a high retic count. This is just one example of how labs can be 'normal' even when having a crisis, and I will highlight others in the future.

Let me know if you have any questions!

**I just want to clarify that a reticulocyte count is NOT part of a CBC and requires an additional order. However all sickle cell patients should have a retic count ordered with every cbc, if that’s not happening find another hematologist.
