The Jackson Police Department would like to remind citizens of a few important items and ordinances pertaining to the upcoming 4th of July Holiday.

The Jackson Police Department will have officers monitoring the City Park and surrounding area for the safety of the citizens in the park. On the 4th of July, citizens are reminded that numerous areas in and around the Jackson City Park will be closed to vehicular traffic, and that many areas will be posted as no parking for the safety of all motorists and pedestrians. Anyone parking in a posted no parking zone may be towed at the owner’s expense

After the fireworks display is complete on July 4th, motorists are urged to be patient when exiting the area, and remember that officers will be posted at all major intersections to aid in clearing the area of vehicles. You may be asked to travel in a direction that you don’t want to go, but officers are trying to assure for the safe and efficient clearance of traffic from the area.

Citizens are also reminded no dogs are allowed in the Jackson City Park on the 4th. Signs will be posted at various areas throughout the park reminding citizens of this law.

Anyone violating city ordinances pertaining to fireworks or dogs are subject to arrest and will be asked to leave the City Park for the entirety of the event.

Here are a few of the City’s ordinances that pertain to fireworks:

Sec. 45-505. Discharge of fireworks and fi****ms.
It shall be unlawful for any person, firm or corporation to sell, offer for sale, expose for sale, use, discharge or explode within the city a blank cartridge, toy pistol, toy cannon or cane in which explosives are used, or the type of balloon requiring fire underneath to propel same, firecrackers, torpedoes, sky rockets, roman candles, aerial salutes, bombs or other fireworks of any kind whatsoever except as specifically provided in this Code. The exclusions set forth in section 23-58 of this Code are incorporated herein by reference.

This Ordinance, 45-505, is in effect year-round with the exception of June 27th at 10:00 am to 10:00 pm and July 4th from 10:00 pm to midnight. During these dates there have been exclusions set out by the City of Jackson that allow citizens to shoot authorized fireworks during set dates and times, and they are as follows:

Sec. 23-57. Limitations and prohibition of sale and use.
(a) No fireworks may be sold except between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m. each day during the period from June 27th through July 4th of each year.
(b) No person shall discharge, ignite or explode any article of fireworks except between the hours of 10:00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m. during the period from June 27th through July 3rd of each year and between the hours of 10:00 a.m. on July 4th and 12:00 (midnight) on July 4th of each year.
(c) No person shall sell, distribute, possess, use, ignite or allow to be ignited any aerial fireworks within the city. Aerial fireworks means any fireworks that utilize a straight and rigid stick of wood, plastic or other material attached to a propellant tube or driver to stabilize or direct flight.
(d) No person under the age of seventeen (17) years of age shall possess, discharge, ignite or explode any article of fireworks within the city unless under the direct supervision of a parent or guardian.
(e) No person under the age of seventeen (17) years of age shall purchase or attempt to purchase any of the fireworks described in this article or present or offer to any person purported proof of age which is false, fraudulent or not actually his or her own for the purpose of purchasing any such fireworks.
(f) No person shall discharge, ignite or explode any article of fireworks in any municipal park in the city at any time, unless such person has received specific written authorization from the mayor and board of aldermen. For the purpose of this section, Municipal Park shall mean any real estate owned by the city located within its corporate boundaries, whether or not solely dedicated to recreational use.
(g) Nothing in this shall limit activities specifically allowed by permit issued under section 23-55.

🚧 ROAD CLOSURE NOTICE: EMERGENCY STORM SEWER REPAIR 🚧

🚧 ROAD CLOSURE UPDATE 🚧

Old Cape Road has reopened to traffic.

As construction progresses, Otto Drive is now closed through Friday, June 26, for continued emergency storm sewer repairs. Please use alternate routes and follow posted detour signs.

We appreciate everyone's patience as this important infrastructure repair project is completed.

🚧 ROAD CLOSURE NOTICE: EMERGENCY STORM SEWER REPAIR 🚧

Beginning June 8, Putz Construction will perform an emergency storm sewer replacement project on Otto Drive after a failed storm sewer created a large sinkhole beneath the roadway.

Construction is expected to continue through approximately June 19, weather permitting. During this time, motorists should expect temporary road closures in the project area.

Old Cape Road at Otto Drive will be closed for several days at the start of the project. As work progresses, a portion of the 800 block of Otto Drive will also be closed to traffic. The timing of these closures may shift depending on construction progress.

Crews will replace approximately 185 linear feet of storm sewer pipe to restore the integrity of the roadway and drainage system.

Please plan alternate routes, follow posted detour signs, and use caution near the work zone.

We appreciate the community's patience as this necessary infrastructure repair is completed.

The Cape Girardeau Police Department is requesting the public's assistance in locating Kevin Candelario.

Kevin is an 18-year-old Hispanic male, approximately 5'6" tall, with a medium build and glasses. Family members have not seen or heard from him since February. He is known to have ties to the Lexington, Kentucky area.
