You packed bear spray. Now make sure you know how to use it.
Bear spray is a good idea on any hike, trail run, or bike ride in Jackson Hole. But knowing when to use it, where to store it, and what to do instead of deploying it is just as important as having it.
Before you head out:
π» Safety stays on until a bear is actively charging. It is not part of the packaging. Keep it. The bear spray safety clip is critical in protecting yourself, your group, and other visitors from accidental discharge.
π» Adults only. Bear spray is a tool and a weapon. Not something kids should be responsible for handling.
π» Keep it within reach at all times, not buried in your pack. Chest strap carry works on trail but watch what happens when your pack hits the ground. A loose canister with the safety off is a hazard for everyone nearby. Hip or water bottle holders are best.
π» Everyone in your group should have their own can if you are traveling in bear country.
π« It's bear spray, not bug spray. Never apply to skin. Seriously, we've seen people do this...
π» Only spray a bear that is actively approaching or acting aggressive. If a bear is minding its own business, leave it alone. Too many bears and large animals are being sprayed unnecessarily.
π» Travel in groups and make noise on the trail. You are on their turf. Let wildlife know you are coming.
βοΈ Don't leave canisters in a hot car or direct sun. Heat builds pressure and can cause discharge or failure when you need it most.
π» The best bear plan is the one you make before you go. Secure your food, know your route, and talk through the plan with your group before you hit the trailhead.
Bears are a part of life in Jackson Hole. Be prepared to coexist.
