The truth is that many first-time buyers qualify for down payment assistance programs, grants, and loan options that can significantly reduce the amount of cash needed upfront.

At the same time, many renters are paying monthly amounts that are equal to—or even higher than—a potential mortgage payment. The difference is that rent builds your landlord's wealth, while homeownership helps you build equity for yourself.

That doesn't mean buying is right for everyone right now. But it does mean it's worth having a conversation before assuming it's impossible.
