Do You Have the Insurance Policy That's Right for You?

06/08/2026

A homeowners policy should not be something you buy once and forget. Rebuilding costs, liability exposure, and property risks can all change over time, and if your policy has not kept up, a loss can reveal coverage gaps at the worst possible moment.

Since June is National Homeownership Month, our team wanted to share a few homeowners insurance mistakes that can cause problems later down the line:

šŸ  Outdated dwelling coverage - Rebuilding costs have increased significantly over the years. A home insured for $300,000 a few years ago may cost far more to rebuild today, leaving a potential coverage gap.

šŸ  Choosing coverage based primarily on price - Focusing only on the lowest premium can lead to higher deductibles, lower limits, or key exclusions, which can create high out-of-pocket costs in the event of an emergency.

šŸ  Ignoring flood or earthquake risk - Many homeowners assume these are covered under a standard policy, but these perils typically require separate coverage. Even in moderate- or low-risk areas, events such as heavy rainfall or ground movement can still cause costly damage.

šŸ  Overlooking liability coverage limits - If someone is injured on the property or there’s accidental damage to others’ property, insufficient liability limits could leave the homeowner responsible for significant out-of-pocket costs.

A quick review can provide a clearer picture of how your policy would respond in a real claim and whether any limits, exclusions, or gaps need attention. Contact our office to schedule a policy review, and we can go over your terms and make sure your coverage still fits your home today.
