The Stonewall Riots Anniversary commemorates the Stonewall Riots that began on June 28, 1969. Police brutality toward the gay and le***an community had reached the point where LGBT folx felt compelled to rise and stand against it. The result was a series of protests and riots that shaped modern LGBTQ+ rights movements.

Leaders of that era like Marsha P. Johnson, Sylvia Rivera, Stormé DeLarverie, and Miss Major Griffin-Gracy - young New York residents at the time - are all referenced as participants in the Stonewall uprising, and their lives and lifetime of work in the LGBTQIA+ community are held up as foundational to the movement.

Remembering the Stonewall Riots is important because it honors the courage of those who stood up against oppression and sparked a movement for equality. It reminds us of the progress we've made and the ongoing fight we continue to face for LGBTQIA+ rights.
