DID YOU KNOW?
In April 1889, Frederick Douglass traveled by rail from Jacksonville to St. Augustine and delivered a powerful address at Genovar’s Opera House in St. Augustine to a packed audience of nearly 700 people. {more on his Jacksonville in another post}.
From abolition to Reconstruction to civil rights advocacy — his presence in Florida reminds us that this city was part of a much larger national story.
History lives here. And we tell it.

Jacksonville continues to earn its place on the national travel map — and we’re proud to see our city featured on Essence.com as a destination for solo women travelers.
In “The Black Girls’ Guide to Travel: Budget-Friendly Solo Adventures,” Jacksonville is highlighted alongside destinations such as Lodi, California; Boone, North Carolina; Columbus, Ohio; St. John’s, U.S. Virgin Islands; Cartagena, Colombia; and Tbilisi, Georgia. This feature affirms what we already know — Jacksonville offers depth, culture, and meaningful experiences for travelers seeking connection and discovery.
At Explore Jax Core, our mission is to curate heritage-centered experiences that elevate Jacksonville’s rich Black history, architecture, and cultural legacy — especially for women traveling intentionally and independently.
We invite you to press play, read the story, and experience Jacksonville through a deeper lens.
Thank you to those who have toured and explored with Yollie and Explore Jax Core.

“THE HARP” — Is it a mural, or is it a sculpture? 👀
Either way, it opens the door to a powerful story deeply rooted in Jacksonville.
This single work connects the dots between Lift Ev’ry Voice and Sing, the Stanton School, James Weldon Johnson, prayer, poetry, protest, and U.S. 🇺🇸 history.
Whew… it’s a lot — and it’s that important.

“First Class” 360 Black History Tour 365 — This was a GREAT tour filled with history and questions about Jacksonville’s Black history. They were lively, engaging and interested in learning about Jacksonville’s Black History and those folks who once called Jacksonville home.
“First Class” is how we ride — Fully enclosed vehicle with Heat 🥵 on this chilly 🥶 days in Northeast Florida we were good.
