May is Wildfire Awareness Month.
As the weather becomes warmer and wildland vegetation, or fuels, begin to dry out, it is time to plan for the wildfires. During a wildfire, embers cause most home ignitions.
Please review below how you can do your part to prevent wildfires and know what to do if there is one.

Since Friday, Geary County Rural Fire Department responded to 7 runs. It included:

Friday- 5:00pm- Humboldt Creek Road East - 60 acres burned from a controlled burn of 1 acre. Mutual Aid partners Alta Vista Rural, Dwight Fire, and White City responded and assisted. Units cleared the scene around 8:30pm.

Saturday- Training from 9:00am till about 12:00pm. During this, units were dispatched to the area of Skiddy Road and Red Road. Several burning hay bales that that the personnel assisted the owner with extinguishing. This was from a previous burn.

7:49 pm - Units dispatched to the area of Rolling Hills Drive for a leaking propane tank feeding a residence. The tank had been overfilled earlier in the week, and the heat of the day caused the tank to release some pressure. Propane company responded and units stood by. Cleared the scene at 9:20pm.

8:38 pm- K-244 Hwy- grass fire threatening a structure and heading north from the property. NO burn permit was issued for this fire. Units dealt with containers of old tires on fire, large trees on fire, and numerous pieces of refuge and abandoned items scattered in the tall grass making maneuvering very tough. Units left the scene at 00:15 hrs and then spent about another 1/2 hr putting the trucks back in service for the next call.

9:10 pm - McGeorge Road- Carbon monoxide alarm sounding. Unit arrived and determined it was a faulty monitor. Cleared the scene at 9:33pm.

Sunday - 6:35 am I-70 mile post 313 for several spot fires. Trucks responded and applied water to the smoldering grass piles. Units cleared the scene at 8:00 am.

9:15 am - Unit returned back to K-244 to extinguish some smoldering areas. They remained on scene until about 10:45 am.

10:00 am - Volunteers returned back to the station to make sure all the trucks and equipment were ready to go, which included fuel topped off, pump water tank full, drinking water on each truck. With all of these calls, the firefighters went through several cases of drinking water and Gatorade. They left to go home around1:00 pm to wait for the next call/page.

We appreciate all of our volunteers who respond to help us out with these fires. They take time off work, are away from their families, and may times miss events with their spouse and
children.

We are still looking for additional volunteers to come be part of our team. We need help across the rural area of Geary County, which is everything but the cities of Junction City, Milford, and Grandview Plaza. You can visit with us and pick up an application at 236 E 8th in Junction City.
