The first photo is my 1990 Corolla alltrac wagon pulling 2,000+ lbs, which it moved from Indianapolis to Chicago with zero problems (twice, a total of ten fryers). I charged $800 for that job, and did all of the loading and palletization of the fryers by hand.
I bought the car with 263,000 miles on it, and did not intend to do transports with it at all. But after my 2019 F150 was totaled, I tentatively began to do work with the car. It exceeded all of my expectations. And even though the windows didn’t roll down and it had no AC (the sunroof provided the only airflow) and puttered along with only 110 horsepower, I somehow liked it better than the truck. It didn’t beep at me whenever I did, well, anything. It didn’t lock its own doors. It cost $35 to fill up on a bad day. Most of all, it put in 40,000 miles of hard work with zero break downs and delivered 20+ mpg doing it. Adequate braking power, zero trailer sway, climbing through the Rockies and Sierra Nevadas in third gear multiple times on what I believe to be the original five speed manual transmission. I kept wondering when something was going to give up, and nothing ever did. Not even the garden hose that the previous owner had installed in place of the line between the radiator and engine.
With this car, I finally began to pay down debts. Then I began to save up cash. Midway through a $2,500 job between California and Florida, I finally upgraded to a Toyota Sequoia, also with 300,000 miles on it. I like it. Unlike my F150, it doesn’t beep at me even when I leave my seatbelt off. Or open the door with the vehicle in gear. Or do other truck things. But it does lock its own doors when I don’t want it to. The “SVC track” engages unnecessarily and refuses to turn off, and a blinking orange light showed up when I asked it to shift into 4WD.
But it can tow more than the Corolla, or at least I assume it can. I didn’t find that car’s upper limits, and I don’t want to. Soon the Seqouia will be completing a very important transport… I’ll be picking up the Corolla from the handoff point in Arizona and returning it to Michigan, where it will finally be my “fun” car.
