One of the earliest Christian symbols. It’s in the oldest manuscript of the Gospel of Luke ( 200). It is the Greek letters tau (T) and rho (P) to depict a man hanging on a cross.
The scribe used this within the Greek word for
"cross" (ETAYPOZ, stauros) in the words of Jesus: "Whoever does not carry their cross and follow me cannot be my disciple" (Luke 14:27).
It’s an important signifier of what was central to early Christians….the suffering of the cross as what Christ did for them and with them and what they are called to do for and with others.
