COVERING WESTON: A group of Weston residents spent Saturday morning helping preserve pieces of local history at Laurel Hill Cemetery.

About a dozen people attended a workshop led by Kurt Jordan, known as the KC Cemetery Man. This was the second year Jordan visited Laurel Hill to host a workshop.

The workshop allowed residents to learn techniques for caring for grave markers and preserving cemetery history. Jordan demonstrated how to use a non-toxic biological cleaner called D/2, which is designed to remove mold, mildew, algae, and lichen from stone and masonry. The cleaner is commonly used for cemetery preservation.

During the demonstration, Jordan told attendees to look up the names on the stones and learn about the people buried there. If they felt comfortable, he encouraged attendees to say the person's name out loud while cleaning the marker.

The group cleaned several gravestones in the southeast section of the cemetery near Welt Street using specialized brushes and D/2 cleaner. Jordan selected stones that were stable and safe for volunteers to work on.

In 2025, Jordan held the same workshop at Laurel Hill Cemetery in front of 13 people on June 7. Later that year, he returned to the cemetery to reset multiple gravestones.

After last year's visit, the Laurel Hill Cemetery Association assembled a cleaning kit using the same materials Jordan used during the demonstration. Volunteers can contact the association to use the kit to clean gravestones in the future.

The KC Cemetery Man held his first workshop of 2026 at New Harmony Cemetery near Gower in March. He has also visited other cemeteries across the area this year to help volunteers clean and reset gravestones.
