The Greatness of Going Low Tuesday, September 30, 2025

Philippians 2:1-4
Therefore if there is any encouragement in Christ, if any consolation of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any affection and compassion, 2 make my joy complete by being of the same mind, maintaining the same love, united in spirit, intent on one purpose. 3 Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but with humility consider one another as more important than yourselves; 4 do not merely look out for your own personal interests, but also for the interests of others.

God calls His children to a high standard—to live in the way that Jesus did. “ For you have been called for this purpose, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, so that you would follow in His steps,” (1 Peter 2:21). One of the things that many believers struggle with in following Jesus is being willing to put the needs of others ahead of our own. It will always be easier to ignore a problem instead of investing our time, energy, or resources in fixing it, but the easy path is often not the right path.

Rather than focusing on ourselves, which inevitably leads to pride, we should be concerned about those around us. Andrew Murray wrote, “The humble man feels no jealousy or envy. He can praise God when others are preferred and blessed before him. He can bear to hear others praised while he is forgotten because he has received the spirit of Jesus, who pleased not Himself, and who sought not His own honor. Therefore, in putting on the Lord Jesus Christ he has put on the heart of compassion, kindness, meekness, longsuffering, and humility.”

When the Lord of Heaven and Earth knelt down to wash the feet of His disciples, who that very day had been arguing about which of them deserved the most honor, He was sending a powerful message. Meeting needs is never beneath us. Helping and serving others is always right. And when we live in that way, we are truly living as Jesus did.

Today's Growth Principle
Caring for others and doing what we can to help them shows them an example of how Jesus lived.

The Shortest War Monday, September 29, 2025

Revelation 20:7-10
When the thousand years are completed, Satan will be released from his prison, and will come out to deceive the nations which are at the four corners of the earth, Gog and Magog, to gather them together for the war; the number of them is like the sand of the seashore. And they came up on the broad plain of the earth and surrounded the camp of the saints and the beloved city, and fire came down from heaven and devoured them. And the devil who deceived them was thrown into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are also; and they will be tormented day and night forever and ever.

In 1896 the sultan of Zanzibar (modern-day Tanzania), who had been strongly aligned with Britain, died under mysterious circumstances. His successor took power in violation of an agreement with Great Britain, which quickly issued an ultimatum: vacate the palace with his troops or face war. When he refused, British warships opened fire on the capital, reducing the palace to rubble. The entire Anglo-Zanzibar War lasted less than forty-five minutes before the sultan surrendered, and it is remembered as the shortest war in recorded history. The gap in power between the two sides was so great that the outcome was never in doubt.

Though there has been a battle raging in our world since Adam's sin in the Garden of Eden, the outcome is not and never has been in doubt. God is not fighting hoping to overcome an equal. God is all-powerful. His word was powerful enough to create the entire universe, and His word will be powerful enough to win the final conflict without any help. “And out of his mouth goes a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treads the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God” (Revelation 19:15). It is easy to look at the problems in the world around us and be discouraged, but we are on the winning side as part of God's family.

Today's Growth Principle
God's unlimited power is available to us each day as we fight our battles from a victory that has already been won
