🐸🌧️ Tonight Could Be a “Big Night” for Amphibians! 🦎
Every year, on the first warm, rainy nights of spring, thousands of frogs and salamanders migrate to their breeding wetlands in a phenomenon known as “Big Night.” Tonight may be one of those nights!
To help protect migrating amphibians as they cross local roads, the City of Keene will close portions of:
🚧 North Lincoln Street – Closed to all traffic
🚧 Jordan Road – Closed to through-traffic
🕖 Closures begin at approximately 7:00 PM tonight (Monday, March 16) and remain in place until 7:00 AM tomorrow morning.
Important Information for Visitors:
🔦 North Lincoln Street Crossing
Visitors are welcome to observe the migration here. Please dress for the weather and bring a flashlight for every member of your group—cell phone flashlights are not bright enough.
🚫 Jordan Road Crossing
Due to safety and parking concerns, only trained Salamander Crossing Brigade volunteers wearing proper safety gear should attend this location.
⚠️ Weather Safety Reminder
Cheshire County is under a Flood Watch and Wind Advisory tonight. Stay alert for flooded roads and strong winds. If conditions become dangerous, please stay home and plan to visit another night.
👨👩👧 Bringing Kids?
Children must be accompanied by an adult at all times. Big Nights are best suited for elementary-age children and older.
🚗 Parking
If driving, please park in the southeast section of Woodland Cemetery and enter through the Beaver Street gates.
• The Greenlawn Street gate is not recommended due to flooding concerns.
• All other cemetery entrances will be closed to vehicles.
• Please do not park on North Lincoln Street.
🌙 When to Visit
Amphibian migrations happen after dark during rainy weather. When North Lincoln Street is closed, a Harris Center naturalist will be on site from shortly after sunset until 10:00 PM—but only if it’s raining and wind conditions are safe.
