Legitimate entities already have your data: Financial institutions and government agencies (like the IRS or Social Security) already possess your account numbers and Social Security information. They do not need to call you to "verify" it.

Unexpected calls are red flags: If someone calls you out of the blue claiming to be from your financial institution, the FBI, or a utility company and asks for sensitive details, it is a scam.

"Verification" is a trap: Scammers often use a fake "security concern" or "suspicious activity" alert to trick you into giving up your password, PIN, or one-time login code.
