White-tailed deer and elk can be born with a rare genetic condition that causes irregular white patchy patterns on their brown coats — piebald. This pattern is caused by a recessive gene that affects pigmentation. Different than albino animals, piebald animals usually have normal eye and hoof color.

While piebald deer can be occasionally seen throughout the Keystone State — making up less than 1% of the population — piebald elk are much rarer.

Piebalds typically have other abnormalities such as short legs, curving of the spine, and organ malformations. Those with severe defects die at birth or shortly after.

Piebald deer are considered a genetic variant rather than a distinct species, so they’re lawful to harvest under the regulated seasons and with proper tags.
