I was a candidate for City Council for Kent, Washington. While I didn't win, I still care about my community!

Hello friends and supporters. Just wanted to pop in, and let you know there's a PAID group canvassing for two things; 1) universal healthcare, and 2) district the city council.

I want to speak a bit about districts and why it's a terrible idea. Stick with me ;) . The idea of a district is that it will offer a voice to under served communities. The reality is it diminishes the focus on Kent as a whole and creates an atmosphere of representatives pandering to the people in the community they represent. There is no longer a need to represent Kent as a whole.

Look to Seattle. They have districts. They have a council fraught with in-fighting, ineffective meetings, and an inability to pass resolutions that actually help the community. You have members who will vote no on an issue because it doesn't impact THEIR community.

Currently, the West Hill of Kent will tell you they are under-served and underrepresented. There are 7 council members, and 2 of those members live on West Hill. If they feel under- served with 2/7 of the council, how do you think it will be any better with 1 representative because of districting?

Also, if they get enough signatures to be put on the ballot, it will cost the city $160,000 to add it to the ballot. If it passes, it will cost the city over $200,000 to hire the consulting to determine the districts. THOSE are the facts you won't be told!

If you have questions, please feel free to reach out.
