🔥 WILDFIRE SMOKE ADVISORY – KEY LARGO & SURROUNDING COMMUNITIES 🔥
Key Largo Fire Department wants to keep our community informed about the ongoing wildfire activity affecting South Florida.
The 172nd Avenue Fire, burning near Florida City in southern Miami-Dade County, has scorched approximately 300 acres and remains partially contained. This fire previously caused temporary closures of Card Sound Road, restricting access to and from the Florida Keys. While the road has reopened, drivers should continue to use caution as heavy smoke may still reduce visibility along the corridor.
Additionally, the Max Road Fire in western Broward County has burned over 11,000 acres in the Everglades and continues to impact air quality across South Florida.
⚠️ What you should know:
Smoke and reduced visibility may affect driving conditions on US-1 and Card Sound Road
Air quality is significantly impacted — limit time outdoors when possible
Residents with respiratory conditions, the elderly, and children are especially vulnerable to smoke exposure
Keep windows and doors closed and set your A/C to recirculate mode
The Florida Forest Service and local fire agencies are actively working containment operations. We are monitoring conditions closely and will share updates as they become available.
Stay weather-aware, stay safe, and look out for your neighbors. 🙏

🔋 BATTERY SAFETY REMINDER from Key Largo Fire Department! 🔥
Did you know that 9-volt batteries — the ones powering your smoke alarms and household devices — can actually START a fire if stored or disposed of incorrectly?
Here's what you need to know:
✅ Keep them in their original packaging until ready to use
✅ If loose, cover the posts with masking, duct, or electrical tape
✅ Store them upright and away from metal objects
✅ Never toss them in a drawer with coins, paper clips, keys, or other batteries
🚫 Do NOT throw 9-volt batteries in the trash — even weak batteries can cause fires when they contact metal. Take them to a household hazardous waste collection site instead.
A small habit can prevent a big fire. Share this with your family and neighbors! 🏠
