Check out the excavation of the first sea turtle nest that hatched in Key West this year!
Save-A-Turtle of the Florida Keys volunteers excavated the nest, counting eggs shells and unhatched eggs to report the number of hatchlings, and looking for any baby turtles that need help making it out.
Thank you The Turtle Hospital for sharing!

🐢🌊Exciting news from our friends at Save-A-Turtle of the Florida Keys this morning!

The first Key West sea turtle nest of the season has hatched!

Even more exciting, all baby turtle tracks went toward the ocean! 🌊🐢😁🙌

This highlights the importance of taking steps to make our beaches sea turtle safe.
Remember:
💡Long and Low: Keep lights off or use long wavelength, low intensity bulbs
⛱️ Clean and Clear: pick up trash, knock down sand castles, fill in holes, and put beach furniture away.
🔦🐢Dim and Distant: if you see a turtle on the beach, keep your distance and avoid using flashlights, camera flash, or cellphone lights. This can disorient turtles and cause them to crawl away from the ocean. Getting too close to nesting females may cause them to abandon the nest attempt if they feel the site isn’t safe.

If you see a sick, injured, entangled, or dead sea turtle, call the FWC Wildlife Alert Hotline at 888-404-3922

All work performed by Save-A-Turtle under permission and authority of FWC.
