A new law limits federal loans to aspiring nurse practitioners to $20,500 a year—less than half what would-be podiatrists, chiropractors and optometrists can borrow.

As the U.S. population ages, the country faces a growing shortage of doctors and nurses, exacerbated by the Trump Administration’s attempts to limit the influx of educated immigrants.

Now, the Department of Education’s decision that the 200,000 students in graduate nursing programs aren’t eligible to borrow as much as other aspiring healthcare professionals threatens to make the shortage even worse for several reasons.
