Celebration of Gardening and Nature hosted by the Lafayette Parish Master Gardeners

04/24/2025

If you are just getting started with planting native plants here are 3 great plants that are easier to grow and offer a lot of reward.

🌻Black-eyed Susan (Rudbeckia hirta)
Bright, cheerful yellow blooms that bees and butterflies love
Tolerant of poor soil and drought once established
Blooms in the first year and keeps going!

🌸Purple Coneflower (Echinacea purpurea)
Iconic, tough, and stunning in the garden
Attracts butterflies, bees, and birds
Easy to grow in a range of soils and sun conditions

🌼Coreopsis (Coreopsis lanceolata)
Cheerful blooms that keep coming all season
Attracts pollinators and adds a burst of color
Perfect for borders, beds, and beginner gardens

These plants are easy to get started either in the fall or early Spring by spreading the seed. Cold Stratification can improve germination. These plants will likely return on their own if you leave seed heads on, giving you many years of cheerful, pollinator friendly flowers!
