Flower Streets Cottage

Our Renovation Story

Erin and Mike Bass purchased Flower Streets Cottage in the summer of 2015 and embarked on a two-year renovation of the 1,500-square-foot house. Previously a rental in a historic neighborhood, the 3-bedroom, 2-bath home was in disrepair but still had good bones. Things were taken down to the original center match wood walls and a wall moved to open up the kitchen and living area. Whenever possible, original wood walls, ceilings and floors were kept intact to showcase the more than 70-year-old cottage’s character. The owners also opened up the main hallway to provide views of the sunroom in the back of the house and created a spacious tiled bathroom with an open-concept shower. The master bathroom connected to the master bedroom features a 1920s clawfoot tub and water closet doors designed by Breaux Bridge artist Kelly Guidry. Local art and furniture is scattered throughout the house: Myrtle Street woodworker Jon Rand created a Louisiana cypress table for the living room, Audubon bird prints hang in the sunroom and a poster of musician Boozoo Chavis decorates the master bedroom.

The home’s kitchen furnished by Ikea is mostly brand-new with only the original porcelain sink remaining. A refrigerator, stove and plenty of cabinet space, with a butcher block counter next to the stove, make cooking enjoyable. A three-seat bar opens to the living room and is lined with original wood salvaged from the walls. A pair of magnolia light fixtures also hang in the kitchen and living room, a nod to the home’s name.

Outside, the exterior ocean blue paint color pops against the bright green of banana leaves, ginger and azalea. The sunroom windows overlook a canopy of green in the back yard, with a huge magnolia tree anchoring the back corner.

With two bedrooms (and a third coming soon), a pullout sofa in the living room and air mattress available, the home currently sleeps 7 people. Two bikes are provided free of charge, and the owners also offer food and drink packages and a pack and play upon request.
