Most backyard chicken keepers know to watch water in summer. But here's what fewer people realize: heat stress doesn't just affect how your hens feel. It directly impacts laying.

When a hen's core temperature rises too high, her body diverts energy away from egg production to manage the heat. That means fewer eggs, thinner shells, and in some cases a full stop in laying that can take weeks to recover from.

A few things that actually help:
✅ Cold water available at all times, refreshed frequently
✅ Electrolytes added to water during extreme heat stretches
✅ Feed offered in the cooler hours of morning and evening
✅ Shade that moves with the sun, not just a fixed corner of the run

Clean, fresh water is the single most important thing you can provide your animals this month. But water alone only goes so far during extended heat, heavy work, or humid conditions.

If you haven't looked at your electrolyte supply lately, now is the time. Horses lose significant amounts of sodium, potassium, and chloride through sweat and they need those replenished to keep drinking consistently and recover well between work sessions. ☀️
