After his resurrection, Jesus gave many “convincing proofs” of being physically alive over a span of 40 days - a long time to just be a hallucination. Not only did Jesus eat with his disciples, physically touch and talk with them, he also appeared to more than 500 others. Even his brother James, presumably an unbeliever up to this point, came to faith in him after encountering these convincing proofs.

Far from being a legend added later into the Christian mythology, the resurrection was a central point of the early Christians as evidenced by the creed in 1 Corinthians 15. Whether you personally believe in the resurrection or not, it is without question that the disciples were convinced that it happened so much so that they stuck to that story even to death. Even a highly educated man like Saul of Tarsus, who persecuted believers and gave approval of killing Christians, was so convinced of the reality of the physically resurrected Jesus that he gave his life over to Him in faith.

Now, some 2000 years later, Christians continue to put their confidence in the fact that Jesus is indeed alive. Because without the resurrection, Christianity is futile and our faith is in vain. As Paul says, we would be pitied most of all men. And yet faith in the risen Christ is not a blind faith, but an assurance of an eternal hope. It is a confidence of these things that we haven’t seen, yet the Holy Spirit testifies to be true.

Much less evidence has been used to assert all sorts of claims throughout history that are widely accepted as historical fact, so the reality of the resurrection is not a matter of available evidence. Instead, it is about a God who so loved you and me that he willfully laid down his life, and in turn whether or not we will willfully surrender our lives to Him as an act of faith. It’s about trusting that He is who he said he is and that he did what he promised to do.

So the question is: Do I place the confidence of my life in the resurrected Jesus? Or do I place it in my own hands and hope for the best? Which one is the proven bet? I’ve yet to see any other credible claims of another person defeating death, so personally I’m riding the Jesus train.
