Friendly Community Reminder About Parking Consideration

We’d like to send a friendly reminder about parking throughout the community, as we’ve recently seen an increase in vehicles parked across driveways, blocking sidewalks, on grass curbs, and facing against the flow of traffic.

We understand why many homeowners prefer not to park on the street. No one wants to risk vehicle damage, and households with multiple drivers often have to manage the daily “car shuffle.” Those challenges are real, and we understand.

At the same time, we all share a responsibility to keep our streets, sidewalks, and common areas safe, accessible, and well maintained.

A few important reminders:

• Sidewalks must remain clear. Pedestrians, including children, parents with strollers, and neighbors out for a walk, should never be forced into the street because a vehicle is blocking the sidewalk.

• Please avoid parking on grass curbs. This damages community property and negatively impacts the overall appearance of the neighborhood.

• Park in the direction of traffic. Vehicles parked facing the wrong direction can create confusion and safety concerns, especially at night when headlights may appear to be from an oncoming vehicle.

For reference, these expectations are supported by the following:

• Walnut Creek Residential Use Restrictions (Section (p) – Vehicles and Parking): Vehicles may only be parked in garages, driveways, or other Board-approved areas.

• Federal ADA Requirements: Sidewalks must remain unobstructed and maintain a minimum clear width of 36 inches.

• South Carolina Code 56-5-2530: Parking on a sidewalk or blocking a public or private driveway is prohibited.

We also encourage residents to use their driveways whenever possible, provided sidewalks remain clear. If driveway space is available, using it helps keep our streets safer and easier to navigate for everyone.
