Musical Moments: What is your child actually learning in music class?

Research shows that children learn music best through active, shared experiences with caregivers, not passive listening like watching on a screen.

Early childhood is when the brain is most open to building these connections. Just like language, music understanding grows with use.

Across cultures, interactive music making has always been part of the human experience, but it’s something we do less and less today.

Children learn music the same way they learn to speak. Through listening, observing, repetition, and joining in over time.

In class, they’re:
• watching others
• hearing the same songs again and again
• learning through you
• becoming part of a shared musical experience

They’re also building real skills through play:
• hearing and repeating rhythm patterns
• keeping a steady beat
• using instruments to develop fine motor skills
• moving their bodies, both small and large movements, to build coordination

So even if it looks simple, there’s a lot happening.

And it doesn’t happen all at once.

It grows through repetition, connection, and making music together.
