COPD, or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, is a common chronic illness among seniors. This chronic inflammatory lung condition obstructs airflow from the lungs and is usually caused by long-term exposure to cigarette smoke or irritating gases. It causes symptoms like wheezing, cough, mucus production, and difficulty breathing. Older adults with COPD are at a higher risk of developing other severe health conditions, such as lung cancer and heart disease. Although COPD is a progressive, chronic disease, it is treatable with proper management.
