Happy 250th birthday to the United States of America!

On Independence Day, it’s important to remember and celebrate all those who fought for our founding ideals: liberty, equality, and justice. Thank you to our veterans and all who engage civically.

Today we honor the life and service of Emily Barker, a dedicated wildland firefighter from Clinton Township who tragically lost her life on June 27, 2026, while battling a wildfire along the Colorado‑Utah border. She and her fellow firefighters were working to protect lives, property, and natural resources when the Snyder/Knowles Fire rapidly intensified.

Emily’s courage and commitment to serving others reflect the very best of our community. Wildland firefighters face incredibly dangerous conditions, often far from home, driven by a deep sense of duty and selflessness. Her sacrifice is a powerful reminder of the risks these brave individuals take every day to keep others safe.

We extend our deepest condolences to Emily’s family, loved ones, and colleagues during this incredibly difficult time. Our community stands with you as we remember her life, her dedication, and her service.

Please join me in keeping Emily and all who loved her in your thoughts.

On June 15, the college’s Public Service Institute unveiled their new Fire Apparatus Building on East Campus, a $3.5 million dollar project. The project was supported by a $2 million appropriation from the state of Michigan.

The 3,500 square-foot building will house a fire engine truck, an aerial ladder fire truck, which was donated by Eastpointe Fire and Rescue, and equipment firefighters use daily. The facility mirrors the stations Macomb’s fire cadets will work in, providing a real-world training environment.

Macomb County Executive Mark Hackel and Rep. Denise Mentzer, Michigan House of Representatives, along with Macomb President James O. Sawyer IV, officiated the brief program.
