NEW HOUSING ALERT! 🚨

Let’s celebrate a very important project coming to Grand Rapids! 🎉

Housing should meet us at every stage of life. Unfortunately, senior housing is hard to find in District 82, so this project is extremely important and I’m proud to have done a small part to help move it forward.

I'm excited to celebrate $1.5 million in MSHDA funding for the 848 Division development led by United Methodist, Samaritas, and the GR Housing Commission.

The project includes:

• Affordable Senior Housing
• Childcare
• Health & Wellness Services
• Jobs & Community Investment

This is the kind of investment our community deserves. One that helps older adults age with dignity, supports working families, creates good-paying jobs, and brings new opportunities to Southeast Grand Rapids. I'm proud to have advocated for this project at the state level and look forward to seeing its impact come to life. Thank you to all the incredible partners!

HB5806 and its companion bills that form a Low Income Housing Tax Credit for MI are headed to the Governor’s desk to be signed into law!

This morning the senate passed the package out of their chamber. We are one step closer to more affordable housing for Michigan!

When I entered the legislature I promised to dive deep into our housing crisis and figure out what tools are needed to address it. I’m honored to be doing just that!

Extreme heat is more than a climate issue. It is a public health issue, an environmental justice issue, a housing issue, and an equity issue.

This week's heat wave is a reminder that the time to act is now!

Thank you to the Greater Grand Rapids NAACP and our community partners for bringing people together to raise awareness about the impacts of urban heat islands and the urgent need to invest in neighborhoods that have too often been overlooked. For far too long, historically underserved communities, especially Black communities and other communities of color, have borne the greatest environmental burdens while having the fewest resources to respond.

Every family deserves to live in a neighborhood where they can breathe clean air, enjoy safe parks, and lead healthy lives, regardless of their ZIP code. That's why we must continue investing in solutions like expanding our tree canopy, strengthening public health infrastructure, and building more climate-resilient neighborhoods that protect people's health and improve quality of life.

Stay safe, stay hydrated, and take care of one another. If you need a place to cool down, call 211 or visit 211.org for assistance. You can also find a list of Kent County cooling centers at the link in my bio.

Housing affordability remains one of the biggest challenges facing communities across Michigan, and we have to use every single tool available to address it.

That’s why I’m proud to sponsor House Bill 5806, which establishes and administers a state-level tax credit program to help keep new construction affordable while preserving and upgrading existing affordable housing. This is a practical, proven tool that helps move projects from concept to construction and makes every investment go further.

I'm incredibly proud that today this bill passed the House. While there is still work ahead, this is an important step toward making housing more affordable for Michigan families.

There is still more work to do, but we cannot afford to stand still while housing costs continue to rise and the shortage of affordable homes grows. Every Michigander deserves access to safe, stable, and affordable housing.
