For years, the state would use benefits that belong to foster children - which could include certain federal benefits - to help pay for their care.

Under MCC-supported legislation headed to the Governor, that practice would stop.

Instead, the money would be kept for them to use to get on solid economic footing once they exit the foster system.

The legislation received broad support in both chambers, passing the House 107-1 and the Senate 36-0.

MCC advocacy would help cut red tape for Catholic and nonpublic schools - here's how:

Currently, schools in Michigan that operate preschool programs must be licensed both as a school and a childcare center under state law. Pending legislation in the state House would eliminate the requirement for those schools to also be licensed as a childcare center.

The original version of the legislation covered public schools only, but MCC successfully advocated for including nonpublic schools in the bill.

Among MCC’s advocacy principles is a commitment to protect nonpublic schools from excessive regulation.

The bill is before the full House now.
