All around us—on sidewalks, between bricks, and thriving in abundance in our natural areas—are mysterious living crusts. You might not notice them at first, but once you start looking, you begin to see them everywhere. They come in colors of brilliant yellow and gold, grays, and greens.

They are called lichens, and they’re a wonder of the natural world. Not just one organism, but two (or more) living and growing together as one. A fungus creates the structure, while photosynthetic bacteria or algae produce energy through photosynthesis—creating a mutualistic symbiosis where both species benefit.

Take a look around your neighborhood. Sidewalks, bricks, and older wooden structures are great places to start. Different colors, shapes, or textures often indicate a new partnership. How many can you find?
