In January 1840, the city of Laredo became the capital of something that barely anyone today has heard of: the Republic of the Rio Grande. π΄ It was a short-lived rebel republic that declared independence from the centralized government of Mexico, drawing support from a broad alliance of federalists in what are now the Mexican states of Coahuila, Nuevo LeΓ³n, and Tamaulipas, as well as Tejano and Anglo settlers along the north side of the river. The republic had a flag, a president, a congress, and for 283 days, a fighting army.
It didn't survive. πΊοΈ Mexican federal forces pushed back hard against the rebellion, and the Republic of the Rio Grande's army was defeated at the Battle of Santa Rita de Morelos in March 1840. The leaders of the movement scattered, some fleeing to Texas and others surrendering to federal authorities. By November 1840, the republic was finished. But for those 283 days, the people of Laredo had been the capital city of their own country, and they hadn't been aligned with either Mexico or Texas. They had been something else entirely.
The former capitol building in Laredo, a simple adobe structure from the early 19th century, still stands today and operates as the Museum of the Republic of the Rio Grande. ποΈ Laredo has always been a city that lives in its own category, shaped by the river, by two nations, by three centuries of borderlands history that doesn't reduce to any simple story. The Republic of the Rio Grande is the strangest and most forgotten chapter in the whole complicated history of this city and this river. Had you ever heard of the Republic of the Rio Grande before today?
