Manufacturing fiberglass, called pultrusion, involves pulling fibers through a plastic resin bath, then through a heated die. This is called thermoset because the fiberglass, unlike PVC and vinyl, is irreversible, which makes it a strong and durable material.

The first windows mass-produced were created by the Anderson Lumber Company in 1915. They were originally designed for the U.S. military during World War I for barracks and other buildings. They were so successful that they were named “Victory” windows for their part in the war effort.

While aluminum windows are the least energy efficient since metal conducts heat and cold the most out of all window materials, specially designed aluminum windows are now in use to improve efficiency. This includes thermal breaks to separate the interior and exterior surfaces and prevent temperature conduction.

Energy efficient windows fight heat gain and loss in three ways: the frames act as thermal barriers, low-e glass is used, and there are enclosed air spaces between panes. The closer in insulating properties these are to each other, the more efficient the window is.

Coatings can be applied to window panes to make the window more energy-efficient. However, not all coatings are created equal. Double soft coating is superior to single soft coating, and vastly superior to pyrolytic hard coating.
