Fires Damage three Structures, Injures One, in 13-hour Period

Las Cruces firefighters had a busy 13-hour period on Wednesday as they battled three separate structure fires, one of which injured a man.

About 7:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 11, 2025, firefighters responded to the report of a commercial structure fire at the Discount Tire store at 420 S. Telshor Blvd. Upon arrival, firefighters encountered heavy smoke inside the building.

Crews quickly located the source of the fire in a second-floor storage area. The fire was contained to that area and extinguished.

No injuries were reported, and the business was able to remain open for the remainder of the day. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Shortly before 6 p.m. Wednesday, firefighters responded to the report of a shed on fire at the intersection of Lohman Avenue and Solano Drive. A bystander told firefighters that a man was possibly inside the shed. Firefighters located a man and removed him. Crews provided immediate patient care while the fire was suppressed.

The victim, whose name and age remain unknown, was initially transported to a local hospital and then airlifted to a burn care facility in Lubbock, Texas. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

About 8:20 p.m. firefighters were called to a residential structure fire on the 400 block of east Court Avenue. Crews attacked the fire from multiple angles and had it under control within 10 minutes of arrival.

The residence was vacant at the time and no injuries were reported. The cause of the fire and damage estimates are still under investigation.

Police Investigate Suspicious Death Near Lions Park

Las Cruces police are investigating the death of a man whose body was discovered Thursday morning near the tennis courts at Lions Park, 701 W. Picacho Ave.

Police were dispatched to the park about 5 a.m. Thursday, June 12, 2025, after a passerby discovered the body of a man near the tennis courts. Due to the unknown circumstances surrounding the incident, LCPD detectives were called to investigate.

The deceased will be sent to the medical investigator’s office for autopsy and to help determine the cause of death.

Investigators have yet to confirm the identity of the man.

Anyone who may have witnessed suspicious circumstances at or near Lions Park during the early morning hours of Thursday, June 12, is asked to call police at (575) 526-0795.

Police Seek Stabbing Suspect

Las Cruces police are investigating a stabbing that occurred early Saturday morning along the 200 block of east Idaho Avenue.

The victim, a 39-year-old man, told police he was sitting in his car shortly after midnight Saturday, June 14, 2025, when someone approached and demanded the keys to his vehicle. The suspect began stabbing the victim after his request was denied.

The victim was able to escape and ran to the nearby Walgreens store on El Paseo Road. Police and fire personnel met with the victim there.

The victim was airlifted to an El Paso hospital with serious injuries.

The victim described the suspect as an African-American man with a dark complexion. He is said to be about 5-feet-11-inches tall with short hair and a goatee. He was wearing an oversized black hoodie and dark pants.

The victim said the suspect spoke with a mid-west or east coast accent.

Anyone with information that can help identify the suspect in this crime is asked to call police at (575) 526-0795.
