🐾 Service Dog 101

What is a service dog?

Under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), a service dog is a dog that is individually trained to do work or perform tasks for a person with a disability.

Service animals are working animals, not pets. The work or tasks they perform must be directly related to their handler's disability. While many animals provide comfort, companionship, and emotional support, dogs whose sole function is to provide emotional support do not qualify as service animals under the ADA.

Service dogs can be trained to retrieve items, open doors, alert to sounds, provide medical alerts, or help mitigate the effects of PTSD. Each dog is trained to meet the unique needs of the person they support.

While the ADA provides the legal definition, the partnership between a service dog and their handler goes far beyond words on a page. Service dogs are working partners that help people live more independently while building a bond rooted in trust, teamwork, and understanding. Together, they make it possible to navigate everyday life and do the things that matter most.
