Good morning! This is DEFINITELY the last weekend for any sunflowers. The west field at the store (14755 243rd st, Lawrence, KS 66044) still has some blooms…especially along the waterway on the south of the field. Neighbor Kevin took these pictures to show you what is out there still. You have to hunt, but they are there. This is also the last weekend for the Sunflower General store. It is open 9-5 through Sunday. Neighbor Kevin should be getting more calendars in sometime today…so we hope they hit the store tomorrow.

Neighbor Kevin was out and about this morning, and since he knew exactly what we all wanted to know, he sent this:
“I walked both fields this morning. They are not muddy, but tacky, will burn off today. There are certainly flowers past their prime, but a lot of blooms still to open, so a lot of really good opportunity for people to still see the sunflowers through the weekend and get good pictures. The far east end of the east field is a lot of later blooms. It’s kind of like mushroom hunting, you have to be willing so walk farther than anyone else, to find the best ones, and when you think you have walked farther than anyone else, walk a little farther!…But honestly, there will be a lot of good blooms off the “beaten” paths through the last weekend.”
So there you go! The fields are tacky but manageable. The parking should be just fine. An extra pair of shoes is a good idea. The store is open through the weekend…and a great place to wear those clean shoes.
We are surprised we still have blooms. This cool weather has been allowing that to happen.

The sunflowers are filling out. At this point the heads are getting fat with seeds. They aren’t quite ready, (we won’t harvest them until November) but they will all go for bird feed. The wild birds will take about a third of the crop before that happens.
I feel like it’s a photo dump day so show me what you have! I caught a picture of last night’s sunset but missed it from the perspective of the flowers. If you caught one, please share below.
Yes, the fields are still open. Yes, they still look great. Yes, Frog Hoppin’ is at the Sunflower General Store today.

The storms missed us last night and so the sunflowers still stand. They look amazing still.

Just a Family Farm
Hi! Grinter Farms is just your average, ordinary family farm in Kansas. Farming is our livelihood and we predominately grow soybeans and corn, but for the last 50 years or so, we have also planted a few sunflowers. This crop proved to be one that we couldn’t keep people out of, and honestly, we never tried...who are we to stop the enjoyment of others doing no harm? The bloom only lasts for about two weeks and it would truly be a shame to not allow others the opportunity to see it. The bloom usually occurs around the first week in September, and no, we don’t charge admission or a parking fee. We work hard to make sure that we can keep what has become a tradition for so many others alive. Thank you for helping us in that endeavor.
