✨NEW UPDATE ON THE BATTLE FORGED FOUNDATION SHOOTING RANGE PROPOSAL.

Location: Plain City, Near the Landfill

The Plain City Council held a work session May 21 to discuss a proposed shooting range on Western Basin Land & Livestock property near 4700–5100 W / 2700–3100 N.

The Battle Forged Foundation, a nonprofit focused on veteran and law enforcement training, is seeking a rezone from A-2 (Agricultural) to C-3 (Commercial) to build the range. The application originally covered a full 50-acre parcel.

After discussion, the Council directed the applicant to come back with an amended application covering only ~25 acres, limited to the actual shooting range footprint, leaving the remaining land zoned A-2.

Key concerns the Council raised:
- A neighboring property (Wineger) is slated for future residential development, creating a potential conflict
- Rezoning the full 50 acres risked unintended commercial uses if the shooting range project didn't move forward
- The applicant will also need to coordinate road access at 2600/2700 N to align with the City's master transportation plan

The city attorney clarified that the state's 1,000-foot rule is a noticing requirement for new subdivisions, not a ban on the shooting range itself.

Next step: The applicant is expected to submit an amended application with a refined legal description. The Planning Commission will hold a new public hearing before the item returns to City Council for final approval.
