Every woman I know has her thing. Mine is a manicure. Having my nails perfectly painted just makes me feel a little more together than I actually am. Last September during my monthly mani, the nail tech’s hand slipped causing the buffer tool to burn the tip of my pinky. It legit hurt, and three layers of my skin were temporarily gone.

No joke, for over a week I was seriously inhibited in what I could do. The tip of my pinky being burned affected every aspect of my day. Wrapping my fingers around my toothbrush, wiping the tables in the cafeteria at school, typing on the computer, and washing my hair were all uncomfortable reminders of what happened.

It’s hard for our human minds to comprehend how something so small and seemingly insignificant can make such a big impact. But it can, and it did. The purpose of the pinky is just as important as any other body part.

As we learn in 1 Corinthians 12:21–22, “The eye cannot say to the hand, ‘I have no need of you,’ nor again the head to the feet, ‘I have no need of you.’ On the contrary, the parts of the body that seem to be weaker are indispensable” (ESV).

As my pinky began to heal, my thoughts jumped from the nail salon to the New Testament. Hello, Paul and Ananias.

(Acts 9:17 ESV).

Paul was the preacher of his time, no doubt. He was and still is a pretty big deal, but don’t for a second dismiss Ananias. After all, he was the one who gave Paul the courage to go all out for God. Ananias was just as brave and just as obedient as Paul. Paul may have been the rock star, but Ananias—he was the rock.

The power of our purpose is in our willingness to be present for God. Oftentimes we are so worried about being perched on top of our own pedestal that we can’t embrace the power of the platform that God has already prepared for us.

Dear Created Woman, don’t compare your purpose to another person’s plan. Don’t compare your outcome to their outtakes. You are not small. You are not insignificant. You are a part of God’s plan, and that fact alone is a pretty big deal.
I pinky promise.
