For over 30 years, Phyllis Graber Jensen has helped tell the story of Bates.
As she prepares to embark on her next chapter, now, it’s *our* turn to tell hers.
“Phyllis Graber Jensen: Picture Stories,” a new exhibition at the Bates College Museum of Art, celebrates a remarkable career in photojournalism and visual storytelling, from her documentation of the women’s liberation movement in Denmark in the 1970s, to being a staff photographer at the Boston Herald, to her three decades of capturing the depth and detail of life at Bates through her lens.
Join us for the opening reception on Friday, June 12, from 7–9 p.m. as we celebrate the work, artistry, and vision behind so many of the images that have shaped our collective memory of Bates.

On Friday, the Bates community gathered at the Garcelon Field flagpole for its annual Pride flag-raising ceremony, celebrating Pride Month with joy, reflection, and a renewed commitment to the fight for LGBTQ+ rights.
During the event, Anthony Del Real, Assistant Director of LGBTQ+ Programs at the Student Center for Belonging and Community (SCBC), offered opening remarks on the history of Pride demonstrations and the advocates and activists behind them. Daphne Comeau, Associate Director for Center Operations at the Harward Center for Community Partnerships shared a moving personal reflection on embracing her own s*xuality and the small yet meaningful steps we can all take as a community to support LGBTQ+ people.
As Daphne reminded those gathered: “Be a safe space and a soft landing for someone who needs it.” 🏳️🌈
